Angora FAQs
Answers to frequently asked questions about the angora yarns we craft by hand spinning the longest angora wool fibers of our own breed of angora rabbits. 1.- The Angora rabbit 2.- Spinning Angora fibers 3.- Knitting, weaving, crocheting, dyeing 4.- Properties of the Angora rabbit wool 5.- How much Angora yarn for hats, mittens, socks, caps, scarfs, sweaters? 6.- Angora yarn gauge 1.- The Angora rabbit Nature provides the Angora rabbit with a coat that sheds or molts periodically. This coat is easily removed by plucking when "ripe", with no damage to the rabbit, or may be sheared with electric clippers, or clipped with scissors very much like it is done to sheep Unlike commercial Angora we use only plucked angora which ensures that the length of the Angora fiber is significant enough to stay part of the yarn and not shed. We also spinn it fine with high twist to eliminate shedding, and for a terrific fur looking, no machine spinning can yield! 2.- Spinning Angora fibers Spinning Angora is like spinning clouds. Karen Maguire, an experienced knit designer using our angora yarn, says: "The pile is so very thick -over two inches high and slides like water over the skin. I would use no smaller needle than a #7. Lace patterns may give a bigger gauge." A little weight of yarn can go a long way, too. USE ANGORA FOR SPECIAL TRIMS, DETAIL WORK, or spoil yourself with the sensuous feel of a 100% angora sweater.
