Know and Follow the Proper Nail Care Practices
Since nails are constantly growing, some people tend to neglect their nails. They think that it would eventually grow back so they do not mind if some damage is done to their nails. Unfortunately, most nail damages are very painful, especially if the nails become cracked. Infection of the nails is also a big problem that should be avoided.
Most people know about the basics of nail care such as the trimming of nails and keeping them clean. Even though these are very basic, these still need to be constantly done as neglecting your nails will definitely lead to a lot of different problems in the future such as cracked nails or infections.
Aside from these, people often neglect or take for granted the other do's and don't of nail care. One of the most commonly made mistakes when it comes to nails is the using of nails as tools. Using nails for opening containers, typing or as replacement for tools can do extensive damage to your nails. It is best to use the tools made for these jobs, or type correctly using your fingers to avoid such damage to your nails.
Another way in which nails can be damaged is exposing them to chemicals or drying agents such as soap. Dry nails are prone to getting damaged easily so it is best to avoid such substances. Moisturizing nails with hand lotion is also a good practice to do especially after washing your hands.
The cuticle area is one part of the nail that should be protected. This is because it is the area where new nail grows. Any damage in the nail bed may cause nails to grow deformed or infections may cause complications in the growth of a nail. It is best to just leave the cuticles alone, as some usually practice the pushing back of their cuticles due to the belief that nails will grow better.
One thing that you should avoid when dealing with nail problems is that some people tend to pull on their hangnails. This should be avoided at all costs as you will not be able to control how the nail is removed. In these situations, you should cut it using clippers even though you are already itching to remove them on your own. Filing your nails is a good practice to avoid the formation of hangnails.
Nail polish is also a good way to help protect your nails from getting damaged easily. But this should not be overdone and nails should be allowed to rest at times so that chemicals present in the polish will not cause discoloration or weakening of the nail. It is also best to avoid nail polish with formaldehyde as this is a carcinogen which may cause further complications in the future.
These are just some of the things that you should remember when it comes to taking care of your nails. There are still other practices that should be avoided to maintain strong and healthy nails. It is best to consult a dermatologist if you are not sure if your nail care practices are safe and beneficial for your nails.
