    Warm and Soft Angora Rabbit Fiber
Nature provides the Angora rabbit with a fiber coat that sheds or molts periodically. This coat is easily removed by plucking when "ripe", with no damage to the rabbit, or may be sheared with electric clippers, or clipped with scissors very much like it is done to sheep. Angora fiber is only 10 microns (the unit of measurement used to measure fiber diameter), and far surpasses that of other wools such as Cashmere (16 microns) and Merino (17 microns) in fineness. Angora fiber is hollow, giving it insulating properties. Because it is about seven times warmer than sheep's wool, it is usually blended with other fibers, such as wool or silk. Angora fiber is quite clean, so it can be spun directly from the rabbit. A bit of hand teasing may be required to straighten the fibers before spinning. The yarn is washed after spinning. It can also be carded with wool and then spun. Angora rabbits are loved for their exceptional fur and also for their personalities. They make excellent pets and can be litterbox trained. Life with a rabbit can be amusing."Every now and then you hear a rumor that angora yarn involves dead rabbits. Nonsense! Angora rabbits, like sheep, grow hair all over. And like sheep, they're more comfortable when it's removed periodically. They'll shed, or people harvest the fur by combing or clipping. One rabbit can shed 4 oz. of fiber every 3 months--an enormous amount, considering its size. If you've ever seen someone spinning angora fiber right from the bunny (and I have), you'll know the bunny doesn't mind a bit."

Apart from its highly apparent fluff factor, a well-groomed animal will have very little debris in their fiber. Therefore the harvested wool should not need washing or carding - the process of removing debris from wool for even fiber texture/continuity prior to spinning. The finest quality yarn should be handspun with high twist to ensure minimum shedding; angora wool can be marketed raw (unspun) or spun, in either dyed or natural colors. Angora wool is sometimes left in its natural color, but can be hand dyed. Its superior quality can also be demonstrated with its ability to retain dye color permanently over all other types of wool fibers. Angora wool can also be mixed when knitted into clothing, with other soft fibers such as silk, cashmere, mohair, or sheep's wool, at a usually no more than 30% ratio.
