Angora Rabbit

Rabbit
Because the angora rabbit has been specially bred for its long fur for many centuries, they would not survive for long in the wild. Their fur would get tangled in the underbrush, making them easy prey for predators. Their long coat also makes them prone to woolblock, a condition where the shedding fur is ingested by the rabbit, making the bunny quite ill.

Angora rabbits are loved for their exceptional fur and also for their personalities. They make excellent pets and can be litterbox trained. Life with a rabbit can be amusing.

Angora rabbit wool is 7 times warmer than wool.  It has wonderful drape and a furry halo that continues to bloom until garments or accents made from it begin to look like fur.  It is prescribed in Europe for joint and back pain, and conditions with decreased circulation, because of its superior insulating ability.

The bunnies themselves are beautiful, too, and allowed to live long and happy lives as they grow their fabulous fiber.  The angora rabbit molts like a dog or cat, and its fiber is combed off the rabbit (plucked) during its seasonal molt, about 4 times a year.  This grooming in no way harms the rabbit, as only the portion of the coat that has released is removed by hand.  Our rabbits purr during this bonding time.   Each rabbit produces only enough wool each year to make a shawl, when its fiber is spun finely, approx. 400 gms.  And this fabulous, rare fiber comes in more than 10 natural colors.

Angora is 100% natural fiber that wicks moisture away from your skin, is flame resistant, and very beautiful.

"Every now and then you hear a rumor that angora yarn involves dead rabbits. Nonsense! Angora rabbits, like sheep, grow hair all over. And like sheep, they're more comfortable when it's removed periodically. They'll shed, or people harvest the fur by combing or clipping. One rabbit can shed 4 oz. of fiber every 3 months--an enormous amount, considering its size. If you've ever seen someone spinning angora fiber right from the bunny (and I have), you'll know the bunny doesn't mind a bit."
